CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
Incentive is an act of rewarding the employees of the well done job in organization through granting of financial and non-financial incentives. Secretaries, who are to contribute indispensably toward the attainment of organization goals and objectives, have to be given priority in terms of their needs, desires, urges and aspirations. These have to be increased and channel toward a smooth running of the day to day activities in an organization.
The aim of the project therefore is to know the effect of non-financial incentives, on productivity of secretary whether its effect is positive or negative on their performance. The project is also aimed to know whether secretaries used to be satisfied and motivated or not when incentives are been given.
There are five chapters in this project. The first chapter deals with background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, delimitation of study, definition of terms, the second chapter deals with review of related literature of the study, the third chapter deal with research methodology, the fourth chapter deals with presentation and analysis of data and the last chapter deals with summary, conclusion and recommendation.
1.1 Background to the Study
Every business enterprise is set up for the purpose of producing some economic goods or services for the sole aim of achieving some defined objectives. It is also customary that the conversation process involved in optimum combination of inputs such as capital human efforts, material kind and entrepreneurial risks. These factors set to work in order to produce the much desire outcome.
The relationship between the employer and his employees is transactional in nature. This is readily explained by the fact that employer requires the service of the personnel most especially the secretary and in return he is willing to compensate the employees accordingly, so a worker can be compensated through payment if incentives. And incentives are in two ways types.
Financial Incentives: Is a way of paying wages, salaries and other emoluments to workers. It is an alternative way of sharing increase in productivity with workers.
Non-Financial Incentive: Is by the means of providing good working condition and other fringe benefits to workers. It is at the same time those which related to Higher level need (esteem and self actualization) through the provision of satisfied or motivator, advancement responsibility.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In day to day administration of business enterprise, management of different organizations are usually faced with numerous problems that usually affect both productivity and labour turn over.
Such problems are highlighted below:

To be able to accomplish the aim of this research work, the following question shall be tested.
1. Does increase in salary and other non-financial incentives mobilize staff to work better?
2. Does organization which does not introduce incentives to its staff have low productivity?
3. Is the standard of living of secretarial staff affected when non-finacial incentive is introduced?
4. Does discouragement comes when promotion are not given to staff?
1.4 Objective of the Study
The study is carried out range on a number of objectives which are;
1.5 Significant of the Study
Since the purpose of the study is to know the effects of Non-financial incentive on productivity of secretaries at Federal Polytechnic Ede. The study will be useful for the management of this institution and other corporate organization in structuring and administering on attractive incentives that are obtainable else where. If the secretary are satisfied with the type of incentive structure for them, it would give the management of federal polytechnic Ede a strong basis in helping them not only to reduce but also to boost the morale of the secretaries. This will lead to hearty and peaceful work environment because there will be increased job satisfaction and productivity. However, this will also be of help to the society and student intending to research in to the topic or research on the topic.
1.6 Limitation of the Study
This study is limited to the effect of non-financial incentives to the productivity of secretaries using secretarial personnel of Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun state as a case study.
1.7 Delimitation of the Study
This study was delimited to the effect of non-financial incentives on productivity of secretarial staff, using secretarial staff of the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun state as a case study.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Incentives: Means the reward given to the employees for contributing to the goals and objectives of the organization.
Financial Incentives: Is the way of rewarding workers or employees by paying attractive salaries, wages and others endowments to workers in order to aid the productivity.
Non- Financial Incentives: Provision of good working condition and other fringe benefits to the secretaries.
Wages Incentives: Means paying attractive wages to the workers in other to aid the productivity.
Good Working Environment: Good working environment is the physical condition under workers or employees work.
Secretary: Secretary is a person that possess the skills in the act and services, both acquired the secretary’s skills both typing and shorthand and capable of handling delicate and unusual situation.
Productivity: The rate at which an employer contribute effective and efficiency to increase output.
Promotion: It is the urge and movement of people in an organization chart.
Salary: Is an amount fixed as personal enrolment paid to an employer at a determinable time.
Management: These are the group of people saddle with responsibilities of administering in an organization to attain the organization goals and objectives.
Social Incentive: These are the incentives giving to staff in form of organizing end of the year party, presentation of awards, honor and organizing Father Christmas for their children during Christmas period.
