Job Description
- Reuters is looking for a dynamic Bureau Chief to lead our coverage of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, its biggest economy and top oil producer.
- Based in Lagos, you will have the experience, versatility and imagination to produce a competitive multimedia file aimed at investors, professionals and our worldwide media audience.
- The job will involve managing a small group of reporters spread across Nigeria and leading by example with a steady output of exclusive news, compelling human-interest stories and deeply reported features.
- Working closely with colleagues across Africa and the rest of the world, you will write and oversee ground-breaking, insightful coverage on a broad range of topics, from Nigeria’s thriving film industry and tech sector to oil strikes, insurgencies and the race to secure COVID-19 vaccines.
About the Role
As our Nigeria Bureau Chief, you will:
- Lead and inspire journalists to produce fast, agenda-setting and engaging coverage that meets the needs of all our clients
- Plan and coordinate coverage with your team, as well as editors and colleagues who operate in multiple formats – text, video, pictures, graphics, digital and social media - across Africa and around the world
- Write and edit market-sensitive news in real time, as well as deeply reported, memorable features
- Manage staff safety and career development, communicate editorial priorities, and, with regional and specialist editors, set news coverage priorities
- Good writing, editing and communication skills are essential.
Requirements
To be our Nigeria Bureau Chief, you will likely have:
- A track record of breaking news, writing fast and well under time pressure, and producing illuminating features on a complex and challenging beat
- Excellent news judgment, with an ability to prioritise coverage and generate ideas that will resonate with our diverse clients
- A deep understanding of current issues in Nigeria and the region
- Strong communications and interpersonal skills
- Experience managing a team
- A solid understanding of multimedia news planning; some visuals experience is desirable
- A strong command of English; other languages a plus
- An ability and willingness to work any shift, including nights and weekends, and to travel, sometimes on short notice.
