About 40% of children miss out on school and have to work to survive while nearly 2 million children have lost one or both parents to an AIDS-related disease.

Child Safeguarding
Level 3 - The responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have occasional  contact with or access to children or young people.

Role Purpose

  • The Gender Officer will provide technical support to the humanitarian mission to ensure the vision of Save the Children where all girls and boys can hold diverse hopes and dreams for their futures, and have equal opportunity to make these come true are met.
  • The Officer provide technical support to mainstream gender in across programmes in the humanitarian response in NE Nigeria.
  • She/he will ensure gender is integrated into the results-based management frameworks, strengthening and supporting gender equality strategies and facilitating gender equality capacity strengthening for field teams via training and tool development.
  • She/he will not only ensure programmes are gender-sensitive but aim to provide support to make such programmes become gender transformative.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct a Gender Analysis: train staff to participate in the field research, lead on the analysis and report write-up
  • Conduct a rapid Gender Audit.
  • Develop a response-wide Gender Action Plan
  • Present key findings and recommendations from the Gender Action Plan to leadership.
  • Identify opportunities for targeted GBV and Gender Equality interventions
  • Facilitate an office-wide training on gender equality (including on the Humanitarian Gender Equality Marker and the Humanitarian Gender and GBV Minimum Actions)
  • Conduct training sessions for each sector on the IASC Gender Handbook (which supports gender mainstreaming).
  • Conduct training sessions for each sector on the IASC GBV Guidelines (which support GBV prevention and mitigation).
  • Review MEAL tools to integrate gender equality
  • Consult GBV sub-WG/sub-cluster to identify gaps and opportunities
  • Train all frontline staff - who come into contact with survivors -on GBV Guiding Principles for safe and ethical referral
  • Adapt Safety Audit and Assessment tool and train staff on its use: to systematically collect data on risks and vulnerabilities (inc. safeguarding)
  • Train partners on gender equality and if possible, map women’s rights organisations for future engagement
  • Support HR in relation to two priority areas:
  • Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)
  • Gender balance of staff
  • With technical support, engage in the development of a gender mainstreaming strategy for SCI humanitarian programmes in NE Nigeria.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of project objectives and initiatives, both short and long term, encompassing a wide range of issues with a gender lens.
  • Formulate key gender messages and targets from lessons learned, assessments, research and evidence gained through project implementation.
  • Ensure that gender mainstreaming in evident in new proposals.
  • Perform other tasks, as required, to ensure the smooth running of the organisation.

Qualifications And Experience
Essential Criteria:  

  • University degree or equivalent in Social Science, development studies, gender & development or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  • 2 years post NYSC experience
  • Proven experience working on normative change for gender equality and adolescent sexual and reproductive health in sensitive contexts
  • Proven experience in supporting the designing, implementing and evaluating gender-transformative social and behaviour change communication interventions.
  • Experience in supporting the implementation of gender-transformative approaches in the humanitarian context.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting with minimal supervision
  • Specific knowledge of international development and gender equality issues; experience engaging children and other community members on gender equality issues desirable.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Fluent in English
  • Computer literate

  • Prior work experience in communities across Nigeria.
  • Knowledge of the policies, functions, structures and decision-making processes of key national institutions with regard to Gender.
  • Team player with strong leadership skills
  • Local language skills (Ability to communicate in Hausa and Kanuri will be an advantage)
