Job Summary
- The dental therapist is required to provide dental care and education to both adult and children patients.
- S/He should be able to carry out certain treatments, including scaling, polishing, and simple fillings. The dental therapist also has a health promotion and educational role, helping patients to gain the skills and knowledge they need to maintain their oral health.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Obtaining patient's Medical and Dental histories and consulting with other health practitioners as appropriate.
- Preparation of an oral health care plan
- Examination of oral tissues and diagnosis of dental caries and recognition of any other abnormalities within the oral environment
- Taking and interpreting periapical and bitewing radiograph
- Carrying out root planning and gingivectomy
- Apply fissure sealant and fluoride on teeth
- Carry out desensitization of teeth
- Preparation of cavities and restoration of both temporary and permanent teeth
- Administration of local anesthesia using dentoalveolar infiltration, inferior dental nerve block, and topical local anesthesia
- Taking impression
- Carry out gum massage procedures
- Cary out cheek and jaw exercises on patients indicated for it
- Carry out teeth scaling and polishing procedures for all categories of patients
- Give oral hygiene and dietary counseling to patients
- Give post-operation instructions to patients
- Oral toileting and management for physically challenged, medically compromised patients and other groups of patients with special needs especially during admissions
- Oral health education and awareness to schools, canteens, different organizations, and the communities
- Working with every other member of the dental, and medical team to ensure optimal patient management and satisfaction. This includes assisting the Dentist with procedures when required.
- Follow up on patients and appropriate referral as necessary
- Suture removal
- Conduct Pulpotomy and Pulpectomy
- Extraction of mobile teeth in adults and deciduous teeth in children under local anesthesia.
- Disinfect the working area and wash/sterilize instruments as recommended by the clinic’s daily check routine.
Patient & Family Education / Support:
- Provide emotional support and measures to alleviate fear and anxiety.
- Participate in voluntary community health activities to promote, maintain, and restore health and prevent diseases.
- Adheres to Policies and Procedures.
- Adheres to the EHA Clinics Code of Conduct as well as ethical standards of the field.

Requirements

Required:
- A Higher National Diploma in Dental Therapy with 1-year medical internship OR Bachelor of Technology in Public Health Dental Therapy
- National Youth Service Certificate (NYSC)
- Board registration and a valid current practicing license
